How to choose a water meter for automatic reading?
Automatic meter reading (AMR) can make consumption monitoring easier, reduce the need for manual readings, and help detect unusual usage much earlier. But choosing the right solution is not only a matter of equipment cost.
Before selecting a system, it is important to check what type of water meter is already installed, whether it supports automatic meter reading, whether it can be reliably upgraded and what the signal conditions are like on site.
What are the options for automatic water meter reading?
Automatic water meter reading can be implemented in several ways. The best option depends mainly on the existing meter and whether it is suitable for automatic reading.
In practice, there are three basic situations:
- the water meter already has a built-in automatic reading capability (smart water meter)
- the existing meter can be upgraded with an automatic reading module
- the existing meter does not support AMR and should be replaced.
Smart water meters with built-in remote reading
Smart water meters are meters already include automatic reading functionality. Depending on the model, they may use technologies such as M-Bus, wireless M-Bus, LoRaWAN, NB-IoT or other communication protocols.
Examples of this type of solution include:
- GWF UNICO
- Sensus iPERL
- Kamstrup flowIQ 3200 & 4200
- Honeywell / Elster V200H or V210H

Advantages: high reliability, fewer components, fewer service interventions and better long-term stability.
Disadvantage: highest initial cost, dependence on the meter’s communication protocol and possible signal issues in deep water meter pits or underground chambers.

Can an existing water meter be upgraded for automatic reading?
In many cases, an existing water meter can be upgraded with a retrofit module or pulse sensor. These devices are installed on compatible meters and allow consumption data or pulses to be transmitted to an AMR system.
This can be a good compromise because the meter does not need to be replaced immediately. However, reliability depends on several factors: the exact meter model, the type of module used, the quality of installation and the conditions on site.



More reliable retrofit solutions include:
- Honeywell / Elster PR6
- Honeywell / Elster PR7
- Honeywell / Elster Falcon MJ
- Sensus HRI and HRI MEI
- Maddalena FlowPulse, QuadraPlus TRP
These solutions are more expensive than simple reed contacts but they are more stable and better suited for reliable AMR systems.

Are cheaper reed contacts a good option?
Reed contacts are a lower-cost type of pulse sensor. They can be an acceptable compromise when the existing meter only supports this type of solution and replacing the meter is not currently planned.
Examples include:
- Elster / Honeywell T160
- Elster / Honeywell T162
- Maddalena Reed Switch

These solutions may be sufficient for basic pulse reading but they are generally less reliable. They are more sensitive to sensor position, installation quality, contact quality and real field conditions.
As a result, missed pulses, incorrect readings, communication interruptions and additional service visits are more likely. Although the initial cost is lower, maintenance costs can increase over time.
When only a reed contact solution is available for the existing meter, it is usually worth planning a future replacement with a more reliable meter designed for automatic reading.

What if the water meter does not support automatic reading?
If the water meter is not prepared for automatic reading or if it cannot be upgraded reliably, replacement should be planned.
This is often the case with:
- older mechanical water meters without pulse or automatic reading preparation, such as certain older versions of the Elster M100
- damaged or outdated meters where adding remote reading equipment is not technically or financially justified.
If the meter’s verification period is close to expiry, it is usually not advisable to invest in additional equipment for the existing meter. Since the meter will soon need to be replaced anyway, it is better to request a regular replacement from the water utility and agree on the installation of a new water meter suitable for reliable automatic reading.
In these cases, the project budget should include not only the automatic meter reading system, but also the replacement of the water meter.

What information is needed before recommending a solution?
To recommend a technically correct, reliable, and cost-effective solution, the following should be checked first:
- the exact model of the existing water meter
- whether the meter supports a factory-approved automatic reading module
- the pulse value
- whether the module can be installed correctly on the existing meter
- whether the data will be used for billing, monitoring, alarms, or internal analysis
- expected maintenance costs over the full life cycle of the system.
Which solution is right for your project?
There is no single remote water reading solution that works equally well for every building or installation. The best choice depends on the existing water meter, upgrade options, installation conditions, signal availability and how the collected data will be used.
Smart meters with built-in communication can be an excellent choice when site conditions are suitable. High-quality retrofit modules are often the better option when greater flexibility is needed, especially in deep meter pits or areas with weaker signal coverage. Cheaper reed contacts can work as a temporary or budget-friendly compromise, but they usually carry a higher maintenance risk.
The best solution is not necessarily the cheapest at the beginning, but the one that ensures reliable data throughout the entire life cycle of the system.
