An hour without light for our planet
On March 25th 2023 Emasys encourages companies and individuals to participate in Earth Hour. Earth Hour is an international campaign that encourages people around the world to turn off their lights. This year’s ‘The Biggest Hour for Earth’ campaign is trying to create the biggest impact yet.
For one hour from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on Saturday 25th March, we encourage you to turn off the lights at home or work and do something positive for our planet.
Why?
The total greenhouse gas emissions per Croat is an estimated produced 4.36 tons, but closer to 5.5 tons of CO2 if including consumption of goods.
A major factor is the consumption of meat and other animal products, as this alone contributes an estimated 14% of total global emissions. Another 7.5% of greenhouse gases in Croatia is a direct consequence of waste management. Waste does not create itself, but is a direct consequence of our consumption habits.
However, on an annual basis, transportation has the biggest impact on an individual’s carbon footprint. Most Croatians use their own car every day for “door-to-door” transportation from home to work and for transporting children to school and kindergarten.
Many countries, institutions and companies have committed to reduce the carbon footprint of their business, while the EU’s goal is to become “climate neutral” by 2050.
Participating in Earth Hour will show businesses and individuals how easy it can be to make small changes that have a big impact.
How?
There are many ways to get involved, but for our Hour Without Lights initiative, we’re simply asking people to turn off the lights in their businesses or homes for one hour on the evening of March 25th between 8.30pm – 9.30pm.
For individuals
Turn off the lights in your home and for an hour plan some activities such as:
- playing board games by candlelight
- enjoying a meatless meal with your friends and family
- watching a nature documentary
- meditating to the sounds of nature
- enjoying some free time while listening to the Earth hour 2023 Spotify playlist.
For companies
Since commercial real estate produces the most emissions, we want as many companies as possible to participate.
We invite you to turn off at least decorative and other non-essential lighting. Even if you’re not at your workplace over the weekend and you would like your company to take part, talk to your technical service manager or building manager to see what’s possible.
We also recommend listening to podcasts on carbon footprint management:
- The seven steps of Carbonology (podcast series in 7 parts)

Be social
We want to share the importance of Earth Hour far and wide, so please share with us how you spend the hour on social media using #Myhourforearth and #EmasysSatbezSvjetla.
